Heat to Play in Mexico City as Part of NBA Global Games

OKC will face the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, December 7, in the first of two games the National Basketball Association will play in Mexico during the regular season.

It will be the first time the Heat will be playing in Mexico since the inception of the annual games. The team will then face off against the Miami Heat on December 9 as a part of the NBA's Mexico City Games 2017.

The then-New-Jersey-based Nets did play a preseason game in Mexico in 1999, but this will be their first visit under the Brooklyn brand.

The games will be broadcast in the US live by ESPN and Televisa in Mexico. It may also signal an uptick in the number of games we can expect to see played there in the future.

The Suns played the Spurs and Mavericks in Mexico City last season, and more than 20,000 fans showed up for each game at Mexico City Arena.

The Dec. 7 matchup will be the 25th NBA game in Mexico, and the NBA Mexico City Games 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the first NBA game in the United States' neighbor to the south. Clearly coming to Mexico City just because of the huge population here in Mexico but in essence as a gateway to the rest of Latin America could potentially be very important to the league.

These games are of particular importance to the league, which has been keen on adding not only more games in Mexico City to the National Basketball Association schedule, but are openly considering possible expansion into the great metropolis as well. "So that's something that we will continue to look at".

In addition to the on-court action, NBA Mexico City Games 2017 will feature a variety of interactive fan activities, NBA Cares community outreach initiatives and Jr. The Thunder center had his passport canceled by the Turkish government while traveling in Europe this summer, and hasn't been out of the United States since returning on May 21, spending most of his time in New York City.
