Detroit Red Wings to white supremacist group: Stop using our logo

At least one group was seen carrying placards with the Red Wings logo, drawing the response from the National Hockey League team.

The Detroit Right Wings (motto: Rust Reforged!) are a Michigan-based group of Identitarians, an anti-immigrant vein of white nationalism that counts Richard Spencer among its proponents.

The team issued a statement on Saturday, condemning the demonstration, and threatening possible legal action for the use of their logo. The team adds that it believes hockey is for everyone and celebrates the diversity of its fan base and the country.

Some of the protesters were seen carrying signs that appeared to have the Red Wings' logo on them. It is not yet evident whether that group was in attendance in Charlottesville.

University of Virginia Medical Center spokeswoman Angela Taylor confirmed to The Associated Press that one person died and 19 were injured after a vehicle plowed into a group of protesters.

So why is the Detroit Red Wings' storied symbol being used by at least one white nationalist group?

The protests began Friday night when nationalists converged on the University of Virginia's campus and marched while carrying torches. Police dispersed hundreds of white nationalists, declaring an "unlawful assembly" hours before a planned rally to protest the taking down of a Confederate statue in the town.
