President Donald Trump condemned the violence as an "egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides".

The group had gathered to protest plans to remove a statue of the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, and others who arrived to protest the racism.

The New York-based WGA East, which represents about 4,000 writers, issued the statement in the wake of the death of a 32-year-old woman after a vehicle plowed into a crowd.

Earlier in the day, Charlottesville police said James Alex Fields Jr., 20, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses over the ramming attack perpetrated amid the violence, Sputnik reported.

Signer shared in the governor's sentiments, urging counter-protesters and white nationalists to stop the violence and go home. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan denounced the white supremacist views "fuelling the spectacle" as "repugnant". You are not wanted in this great commonwealth, shame on you! Police took a man into custody as the subject of a homicide investigation, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas said.

Before the Saturday rally, hundreds of white supremacists marched through the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville on Friday night, waving torches and chanting "White lives matter", "You will not replace us", "Jews will not replace us" and so on.

Among the dead were two people - Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-pilot Berke M.M. Bates - on a Virginia State Police helicopter that had been assisting with policing the rally.

"I don't think violence is the correct way to voice your opinion", Haley Wilt said.

The organizer of the rally, Jason Kessler, said he disavows the violence that eroded it.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides", Trump said during a short statement, adding that he had been closely following awful events unfolding in Virginia.

For his part, President Donald Trump tweeted, "We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for".
