Floods, landslides claim 30 lives in Nepal

Dozens of elephants and rafts have been deployed to rescue almost 500 people trapped by floods in a popular resort in southern Nepal, officials say.

In Nepal the toll from this year's monsoon - which typically lasts from late June until the end of August - has already eclipsed last year, with more than 100 people confirmed dead.

Several hotels in Sauraha, in Chitwan district, have been inundated, trapping the tourists, many of them foreigners.

The country's home ministry said on Sunday that the death toll had risen to 49, with 17 people injured and thousands left homeless.

Thirty-six people have been reported missing, they added.

The Ministry also stated that personnel of the Nepalese Army, Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, trained security persons and other human resources have been mobilized under the leadership of the local administrations for carrying out search and rescue in the flood affected and inundated areas.

Similarly, the Home Ministry has appealed to one and all including industrialists, business entrepreneurs, civil society and social workers to help in rescue operation and relief distribution. The government has announced relief to the victims and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba addressed the nation on Saturday.

Rescue efforts were hampered by incessant rain and roads that were washed away in many places.

"There isn't a house without water", said Raghu Ram Mehta, a resident of the southern district of Sunsari which has suffered nine deaths, the highest of any district.

Jhapa, Morang Sunsari, Sapttari, Siraha, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Banke, Bardiya and Dang districts were the worst affected by flood. Traffic on Nepal's main East-West highway was stopped after parts of the road and some bridges were severely damaged by the floodwaters.
