Injured Alexis Sanchez ruled out Arsenal's Premier League opener against Leicester City

Injured Alexis Sanchez ruled out Arsenal's Premier League opener against Leicester City

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he's "not super optimistic" about keeping hold of Alexis Sanchez.

It is a major boost for Arsenal fans, who will be delighted to hear that the Chilean has returned to training and will be hoping that his return means he will remain at the Emirates for the rest of the season.

Sanchez missed Arsenal's scintillating start to the new Premier League season, an abdominal injury forcing him to sit out the 4-3 victory over Leicester.

The French manager, who recently extended his deal with the club for a further two years, was asked whether there was an update on the striker's situation.

"He had a little abdominal strain that he caught on Sunday morning in training, before he came to Wembley (for the FA Community Shield final on Sunday)", Wenger was quoted as saying by Arsenal's website on Tuesday. They are on (Kylian) Mbappe's case, that's what I read in the papers.

"He had a scan two days ago and he's out for a while - we don't know if it is two weeks or one more week, but he will not be available", Wenger said at a news conference on Wednesday, ESPNFC reported. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested in the player, who has just one year left on his contract at Arsenal.

Wenger added: "For us Alexis Sanchez is a loss, of course". "We have all the other players prepared in preseason and they are all ready". "I don't think I would have started him", he said.

The Frenchman also dismissed media reports linking Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with rival Chelsea.

"Personally, I think he is a hugely talented player".

Speaking after Arsenal beat Chelsea on penalties at Wembley, Wenger revealed he was looking to trim his squad before the transfer window closes, but he said no departures were now imminent.

I was not bored, you cannot feel that in one of the prettiest stadiums there is. "I believe he will be a very great player".
