Maria Sharapova granted wild card into US Open

Sharapova had been denied a wild card to the main draw or the qualifying tournament of the French Open this year because she was coming off a doping suspension.

Maria Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, has been given a wild card into the main draw of this year's event, the USTA announced on Tuesday.

The US Open runs from August 28 to September 10 in NY.

Sharapova - a former World No.1 - has dropped to 148th in the world rankings. Townsend competed in the US Open main draw in 2014 and 2016, qualifying for the main draw a year ago.

After an extended absence, Sharapova will receive her highly-anticipated opportunity to return to the ranks of the elite. That escalated when she received a 15-month doping ban for a substance that had been recently outlawed: Meldonium, which is used to treat coronary heart disease, and is perceived as a performance enhancing drug.

Maria Sharapova is headed to the U.S. Open.

Sharapova is known for her stunning selfies on social media. She appealed her two-year suspension and it was reduced by the Court of arbitration for Sport.

The five-times Grand Slam victor has had mixed results since rejoining the WTA Tour. 18-year-old Canadian sensation Denis Shapovalov was not on the list. The USTA today announced that rising young Americans Taylor Fritz, Bjorn Fratangelo, Christopher Eubanks, 2017 NCAA singles champion Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, 2017 USTA Boys' 18s National Champion Patrick Kypson and US Open Wild Card Challenge victor Tommy Paul have been awarded men's singles main draw wild cards into the 2017 US Open.

In May, the French Tennis Federation denied Sharapova a wild card entry to the French Open.

The 30-year-old Russian, a five-time major victor, was given one for Wimbledon qualifying but withdrew with an injury. Sharapova also declined playing at the WTA tennis tournament in Canada's Toronto on August 5-13.
