Facebook really is losing teen users to Instagram and Snapchat

These users want more visual content and fewer words, which is why eMarketer believes Snapchat will overtake both Instagram and Facebook in terms of total users at the 12-24 age bracket for the first time this year. Meanwhile, Facebook's growth will continue to slow.

Besides, the report also notes that Facebook's community of monthly users in the USA will grow 2.4 percent this year to 172.9 million people, but the social network's monthly user base among the marketer-coveted 12 to 17 age group will fall 3.4 percent vs. 2016 to 14.5 million people.

Facebook's (NASDAQ:FB) number of US monthly users will grow 2.4% this year, but the social networking giant has lost some appeal with younger users, according to eMarketer estimates.

Still, young people losing interest in Facebook itself is a troubling development, since brand affinity is often built during those formative years. The silver lining, of course, is that teens are flocking to Instagram, which Facebook also owns. EMarketer increased growth projections for all age groups except the oldest, with the biggest jump in young adults, ages 18 to 24 increasing almost 20%.

Facebook's community of monthly users in the U.S. will grow 2.4% this year to 172.9 million people, a figure slightly higher than previously forecast due to increased adoption by older internet users. In total, 16.7 million people will be regular users of the platform, an increase of nearly 35 per cent over 2016. In 2015, teens left Facebook because they found it "meaningless". They're logging in less frequently and spending less time on the platform.

In contrast, eMarketer suggests that Snapchat's US user base will grow by 25.8 per cent to 79.2 million people monthly, and Instagram will grow by 23.8 per cent to 85.5 million.

Facebook, with an estimated 32.5 million users this year, remains the most popular social network in the UK. As a result, Snapchat's share of USA social network users will grow to 40.8 percent.

"But for example, if the client's business is only targeting the under 21 years old youth, we will put more investment behind Instagram versus Facebook", Mr Samy said.

The fact that Snap relies on a single app for growth means Facebook will always have an upper hand when it comes to targeting people of all age groups.

Facebook Inc shares rose $0.33 (+0.20%) in premarket trading Tuesday.
