Fabio Fognini Ejected From US Open Over Vulgar Insults Directed at Umpire

Controversial Italian Fabio Fognini was defaulted from the US Open on Saturday after making foul-mouthed comments to an umpire in his first round match.

Italian Fabio Fognini has been suspended from the US Open for verbally abusing an umpire in his first-round defeat by compatriot Stefano Travaglia.

The Grand Slam Board announced it was investigating whether Fognini had committed a major offence under the Grand Slam Code of Conduct and he was provisionally suspended from the tournament.

Fognini, who was seeded 22nd in singles, was fined a total of $24,000 on Friday by the U.S. Open - almost half of his $50,000 prize money in singles - for unsportsmanlike conduct during his 6-4, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-0 loss to Stefano Travaglia on Wednesday.

"I believe that he played two matches after that match, two doubles matches". At this moment, in addition to addressing my apologies, I am willing to go into a tennis school or any kind of school to talk to children and say what I think, that is, I'm wrong and it will not happen anymore.

'I apologise to everyone, not just the umpire, who I already apologised to in NY, but to all those who felt hurt, women in the first place: I have nothing against them, ' he told Sky Sports Italy. Open women's singles champion Flavia Pennetta.

"I know the thing is still fresh and I could have other sanctions, and I am ready to pay".

The Grand Slam Board consists of the leaders of the organizations that host the four majors - Chris Freeman from Tennis Australia, Bernard Giudicelli from the French Tennis Federation, Katrina Adams from the USTA and Philip Brook, the chairman of Wimbledon's All England club.

Fognini and Bolelli won the Australian Open doubles title in 2015.
