What we learned from Michigan's 36-14 victory over Cincinnatti

The Wolverines opened as a 31.5-point favorites. The Wolverines passing game gave reason for concern, because once again running back Ty Isaac was outstanding.

The numbers weren't bad - 17-of-29 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns - but redshirt junior Wilton Speight missed four throws to wide open receivers, and the offense never really seemed to be in sync.

After Michigan took a 17-7 lead into halftime, Cincinnati shaved its deficit to 17-14 with 11:15 remaining in the third on a 10-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Hayden Moore to junior wideout Kahlil Lewis. He had TD passes to Kekoa Crawford early in the game and to Grant Perry in the third that gave MI a 10-point cushion.

Last week MI held Florida to 192 yards, forced three turnovers (returning a fumble for a score) and held the Gators to nine first downs. Defensively, Cincinnati football yields 14.0 points and 313.0 total yards, 89.0 in passing and 224.0 in rushing per game. He made a handsome throw on a touchdown pass to Kekoa Crawford.

The scoring play capped off an 85-yard, 10-play drive.

MI didn't stretch its lead to more than 14 points until the fourth quarter, and there were a few anxious moments in between. The second quarter didn't go well. In the receiving end, Tarik Black posted 83 yards and a touchdown in two receptions while Nick Eubanks added 61 yards in two catches. The Michigan line should be able to control the line of scrimmage and allow for a big day on the ground, but the Wolverines will likely have to pass the ball well as well. Mike Boon led the Bearcats in the win by rushing for 100 yards on 19 carries with one touchdown. Moore finished 17-for-28 for 151 yards. Sophomore Kekoa Crawford had his best game in a MI uniform, catching four passes for 83 yards and a score, and Speight came up big when it mattered, especially on a 36-yard third-quarter pass to redshirt junior tight end Zach Gentry to set up a 33-yard touchdown strike to junior Grant Perry and a fourth-and-eight 20-yard completion to Crawford thrown on a line in the fourth quarter.

On Michigan's next drive, Speight and Crawford had a timing issue on a handoff and fumbled.
