France seal Davis Cup final spot

France seal Davis Cup final spot

Kyrgios made 65 unforced errors but also hit 20 aces to prevail as fatigue took hold of the 33-year-old Darcis in the last two sets.

Goffin, who had not beaten Kyrgios in three previous matches, returned well and played astute tennis to counter his opponent's big shots on the indoor clay of the Palais 12, extending his excellent Davis Cup record to 15 wins from 16 singles matches.

Doubles maestro John Peers says he and Jordan Thompson executed their gameplan to perfection in Saturday's comprehensive Davis Cup semi-final rubber.

"Lleyton and I have put so much dedication into this, the Davis Cup has been my No.1 priority this year", Kyrgios said, referring to Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt.

In the absence of Novak Djokovic, Viktor Troicki and Janko Tipsarevic, the French were expected to enjoy a calm weekend in the northern city of Lille.

But Pouille insisted despite their rankings superiority the semi-final was no foregone conclusion for France."We are not over confident, we've got an enormous amount of respect for this team (Serbia) which has a lot of very good players", said Pouille.

Australia, a 28-time champion, is chasing a spot in the final for the first time since it won the title in 2003, while Belgium is trying to reach the final for only the third time.

Mahut, who has been hampered by a calf injury in recent weeks, thanked the medical staff for enabling him to play. Tsonga served well, losing serve twice in the first set and facing just 2 break points in the rest of the match.

"It's incredible. It was the match of my career in the Davis Cup so far", an elated Goffin told reporters after levelling the match 2-2.

Meanwhile France won a place in the final when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Dusan Lajovic 2-6 6-2 7-6 (5) 6-2 to give the hosts an unassailable 3-1 lead over Serbia.

Lajovic had stunned Lucas Pouille in the opening match of the last-four clash on Friday and he eased to the opening set, only for Tsonga to find his rhythm and eventually cruise to a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 win. Jo-Wilfried raised his level in set number 2, sailing through his serve games and mastering the points with his strong forehands.
