Vettel out of Singapore GP as Hamilton leads

The German continued only to spin off moments later at Turn Five, his vehicle smashing into the barriers, coolant spewing from its rear.

The three drivers came together, with Raikkonen suffering damage as he was speared into the wall, and then slid out-of-control into the turn, hitting Verstappen and the innocent Fernando Alonso. Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who also emerged from the opening lap carnage unscathed, was second for the third year in a row with Finland's Valtteri Bottas completing the podium for Mercedes.

The resulting collision knocked all three of the fierce rivals - who have plenty of history from previous controversial encounters this season - out of contention at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, leaving Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, the Formula One drivers' world championship leader, free to record an important victory.

"Yesterday we struggled, we had no idea what was going to happen today, but we tried to stay focused, to get ahead", he added. It was very unfortunate for Ferrari at the beginning.

"God blessed me today, for sure". Who would have known that will happen?

"The face is that we can not change it that we're no longer in the race - that's really the bad part". When you're fighting for a world championship, you shouldn't do that.

Vettel himself was keen to play down the incident.

"I don't know, I didn't see that much", Vettel told TV crews when asked to describe the accident. "Maybe he didn't see Kimi on the left but that's not an excuse". This is how this business is. "That's how this business is, and we'll move on".

Verstappen subsequently apologized to Ricciardo. "He started squeezing me". While the Singapore Grand Prix hasn't been his best track, things have changed for him this year with a new team.

The rain cleared only to return 15 minutes before lights out, forcing drivers to switch to intermediates and full wets while waiting on the start grid.

Lewis Hamilton seems to be the one to beat on Sunday. Here's our predictions for what drivers will come away with the win. The race is a 192-mile contest that will run 61 laps around the track.

Further down the field, Carlos Sainz finished fourth, with Sergio Perez and Jolyon Palmer following on behind.

But Hamilton kept his cool to not only remain in charge of the championship - a scenario which appeared nearly impossible here on Saturday night - but extended his lead to more than a single victory. Hopefully the next races are more in our direction.

Ferrari and Vettel will need all the podiums they can get in the remaining six races starting at Malaysia in two weeks time.
