Nest Unveils New Smart Doorbell And Security Camera

Nest says its new products will seamlessly work with the Nest mobile app.

Hello pricing wasn't announced but the product should release in Q1.

Nest's cameras are a reasonably good solution for keeping your home secure, but they lack numerous features you'd expect from a traditional home security system. That includes the Guard, two Detects, and two Tags.

This is the brains of the operation, and acts as the alarm and keypad as well as a motion sensor.

It also enables two way audio, allowing you to tell a delivery guy to leave your parcel in the garden shed.

Just as it did with the humble thermostat, Nest has worked its magic on home alarm system.

It features a Nest Guard alarm hub and a Nest Tag that goes on your keys and enables you to disable it upon entry.

The system can be installed by users themselves, and connects to Nest's smartphone app so that homeowners can authenticate specific people to enter.

One of the benefits of paying for a professional security system is that the companies who install them provide monitoring services that can alert law enforcement if someone does break in.

That's it. While some of the ideas that the Nest Secure alarm system offer are kind of interesting, the whole system largely resembles a kit that SmartThings started selling back in 2013, after a successful Kickstarter campaign.

All in all, the new product line is what I'd expect from a smart device company: Adding intelligence and convenience to traditionally "dumb", mundane systems. Those who opt for the $499 Nest Secure starter pack will get a Nest Guard, two Nest Detects, and two Nest Tags.

Nest is also offering the $59 Nest Detect, a motion-sensing device created to be mounted in doorframes and window frames.

At a press event on Wednesday, Nest introduced another outdoor camera as well as a security system and doorbell, and announced the addition of Google Assistant features to a current camera, while further supporting both the Weave and Thread protocols.

Nest Hello will be available early 2018. The doorbell has the same face detection tech as Nest's security cameras, so it can alert you if people at the door are friends you know or strangers.

The smart doorbell has 160 degree field of view so it can also see packages that are laying on the ground.

Nest hasn't announced pricing for the Hello Video Doorbell, simply saying that it will be available in the USA and Canada from early next year before heading to Europe later next year - and unfortunately there's no mention of Australia.

The $349 Nest Cam IQ outdoor is also available for pre-order now and slated to launch in the US, Canada, and select European markets next month.
