Haley: North Korea 'will be destroyed' if keeps up reckless conduct

"If North Korea keeps on with this reckless behavior, if the United States has to defend itself or defend its allies in any way, North Korea will be destroyed and we all know that and none of us want that", Haley said.

In an editorial published in The New York Times on Sunday, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe urged the worldwide community to remain united and enforce sanctions against North Korea, adding that Tokyo has responded to the North's provocations "by reaffirming the ironclad Japan-United States alliance" and coordinating in "lock step" with the USA and South Korea.

In the days leading up to the UN General Assembly in New York Trump has been actively engaged in diplomacy with countries in the region, conversations that have focused mainly on the threat posed by North Korea. "We all know that, and none of us want that".

The US seeks a peaceful resolution but is prepared to use military force if diplomatic efforts fail to end the nuclear standoff with North Korea, said secretary of state Rex Tillerson.

The firebrand president warned the hermit kingdom with "fire and fury" after it tested a missile capable of a nuclear strike on the mainland U.S. a few weeks ago.

The US will, however, continue applying pressure on Pyongyang.

USA ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley says the UN Security Council has run out of options to deal with North Korea's nuclear threats and may hand the matter over to the military. "If that doesn't work, Gen. Mattis will take care of it", Haley told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union".

"I think under the right conditions, the president said he's open to finding those conditions where we can remain engaged with others on what we all agree is still a challenging issue", he responded.

And Trump tweeted that he's asked Moon about "Rocket Man" - an apparent reference to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The practice attacks followed Friday's missile test by North Korea.

Asked about Mr Trump's description of Mr Kim, national security adviser H.R. McMaster said "Rocket Man" was "a new one and I think maybe for the President".

The authors also called for the appointment of an Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs as well as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, saying that permanent appointees would help ensure that recent sanctions aimed at curbing Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs were properly enforces.

McMaster said the tweet appears to be a reference to North Korean leader because "that is where the rockets and missiles are coming from". Long gas lines forming in North Korea.

The Washington Times quotes a Japanese report that the vessel could potentially be used to launch a ballistic missile into global waters and threaten Japanese, South Korean and USA missile defenses.

"The four no's being that we do not seek regime change, we do not seek a regime collapse, we do not seek an accelerated reunification of the peninsula, and we do not seek a reason to send our forces north of the demilitarized zone", Tillerson told CBS News' John Dickerson on "Face the Nation".

"What we have to make sure is that no deal can provide cover for the Iranian regime to develop a nuclear weapon in a clandestine manner while they're reaping all the benefits of this deal", McMaster said.
