Maharashtra Congress leader Narayan Rane quits party, may float own outfit

Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Narayan Rane on Thursday announced he was quitting the party as well as the membership of the state legislative council.

Rane claimed he had received an offer from the Sena to return to its fold but said he would not join the party. He said he would start his Maharashtra tour from 22 September from Nagpur and show Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan "who the people in Maharashtra supported even though Chavan was president".

"I will empty both the Congress and the Shiv Sena", he said.

"I have handed over my resignation to party chief Sonia Gandhi at 2.30 pm today".

"I went to Congress because I was assured that I will be made chief minister in six months", Rane had said. It is also unsure whether he will quit the Congress officially, as his party can initiate proceedings against him to disqualify him as Member of Legislative Council (MLC).Sources said that the former chief minister will most likely announce that he is going solo and set up an independent banner.

"I do not run after posts.they come to me". "The Congress has no existence in and outside Maharashtra legislature". During the recent Ganesh festival, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had visited Rane's residence, fuelling it further. He claimed that 25 Congress corporators across the State had also quit in solidarity with him. However, Rane's younger son and legislator Nitesh continues to be in the Congress and he stayed away from Rane's press conference at Kudal in Konkan.

Despite Mr. Rane's long shadow over the coastal Malwan belt, a surge of popular anger against his strong-arm tactics, coupled with sanction to controversial ecological projects in the verdant Sindhudurg, led to his undoing.

There has been speculation in state political circles for quite some time that Rane may join the ruling BJP.
