Sonia Gandhi writes to PM Modi for passing Women's Reservation Bill

Sonia Gandhi writes to PM Modi for passing Women's Reservation Bill

After years of lobbying, the bill was passed by the upper house in 2010.

In February this year, former union minister M Venkaiah Naidu, now vice president of India and chairman of the Rajya Sabha, had said the government will pass the women's reservation bill once it had majority in the upper house of parliament.

Sushmita Dev, chief of the party's women's wing All India Mahila Congress, told reporters here on Thursday that the signatures were collected from May 21 - the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi - as part of the opposition party's push for the bill pending passage in Parliament for nearly seven years.

Women's Reservation Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha back in 2010, when Congress was in power.

They said the Congress had had a woman President before and after independence and that the country got its first woman President and first woman Lok Sabha Speaker during the UPA rule. It is a part of outreach to women across India and the victory for Congress president and the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The highly-debated Women's Reservation Bill mandates 33 percent of seats to women in Lok Sabha and other legislative bodies.

Exhorting Modi to get the bill passed in the Lok Sabha by taking advantage of the BJP's majority in the House, Sonia had on Wednesday said in the letter that "Congress Party has always and will continue to support this legislation".

Meanwhile, many in the BJP also feel that in case the government succeeds in getting this constitutional amendment bill passed in Parliament, the party can boost its prospects ahead of the upcoming 2019 General Elections.

Sources said Sonia moved fast over the issue as the party had feedback that the government was planning to make a forward move over the women's reservation bill to score over the Opposition which has been slamming the centre over unemployment and economic slowdown. In the previous Lok Sabha, there were 58 women members. If the legislation is passed, their numbers would rise to 181. Hope PM Narendra Modi will ensure that the majority in Lok Sabha wouldn't be wasted this time too and pass the Bill that has seen political rivals coming together to forge a new, shared and progressive future together.
