Trump's approval rating: President's numbers improve ahead of key Alabama Senate visit

Still, 52 percent of respondents said they disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president.

Almost half of voters, 49 percent, say they support "a single-payer health care system, where all Americans would get their health insurance from one government plan" - greater than the 35 percent who oppose such a plan.

Meanwhile, Trump's overall job-approval rating is at 43 percent, up three points since August. Twenty-five percent approved of his pardon of controversial Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio and 20 percent approved of his response to a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last month. And while polls showed his decision to wind down the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program - which shielded some undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children from deportation - was unpopular, Trump's subsequent nod to bipartisanship by negotiating with Democratic leaders in Congress may have helped stanch the bleeding. Trump's approval rating was virtually unchanged among Democratic voters, however.

The 43 percent figure matches Trump's standing in the latest Economist/YouGov poll-the best top-line figure for the president in a major poll since June, per the RealClearPolitics average.

About 40 percent of Americans approve of Trump, while about 53 percent disapprove, yielding a net approval score of -13, according to HuffPost's aggregate of public polling as of Wednesday afternoon. Sixty-six percent said Trump has accomplished either "only some" or "very little" in office. 14-17. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll was conducted from September 14-18, reaching 900 adults via landlines and cell phones.
