Hurricane Maria Continues Churning Towards the East Coast

Hurricane Maria Continues Churning Towards the East Coast

While the storm is no huge threat to the east coast and will remain well offshore (hundreds of miles), it's those towards North Carolina that should keep their eyes pealed to this storms path. For the next several days, this storm will continue moving north.

Rain rolled into Central Florida Saturday from Hurricane Maria's trek up the Atlantic, along with increasingly unsafe surf and rip currents.

Maria will move away from the Bahamas into the open waters of the western Atlantic Saturday.

The hurricane center said Saturday that tropical storm or hurricane watches may be needed for a portion of the Carolinas or Mid-Atlantic coast on Sunday.

Maria is moving toward the north-northwest near 9 miles per hour, but a turn toward the north is expected by tonight.

No, according to the National Hurricane Center. José passed the Outer Banks offshore last week, and its remnants are lingering off the Northeast Coast of the U.S. Sunday will be mostly sunny with temperatures in the upper 80s.

Millions of people in the Caribbean are still reeling from Hurricane Maria's devastation. Ahead of the storm passing us, winds out of the east are pushing deep tropical moisture over South Florida.

Two hurricanes are in the Atlantic: Maria and a newly-upgraded Lee is a category one hurricane.

Tropical Storm Lee is still being monitored as it rotates in the Atlantic. Typically, we would expect a hurricane passing over or near Cape Hatteras to swirl down cooler air with its counterclockwise flow, but in this case, the warm high pressure is building north and northwest of us, so the source of cooler air in Canada is cut off.

Computer models are all over the place on Lee, with both its track and intensity forecasts.

Much like Friday afternoon, we should see widespread thundershowers and a few stronger storm cells begin to develop in the early afternoon and slowly track east to west through the early evening. This storm poses no threat to land.
