Technical fault grounds flights at Sydney airport

Its believed systems went down just before 5.30 this morning, leaving thousands unable to get on their flights.

Airservices Australia confirmed "technical issues" as the cause.

Sydney airport urged travellers to be patient.

Several flights were grounded at Sydney Airport's domestic terminal on Monday over the peak morning travel period, due to a technical fault with an air traffic control system, which has since been resolved.

A spokesperson from Airservices Australia - the Government body responsible for the airport's air traffic control - told HuffPost Australia that technicians were working to rectify the situation which was "affecting arriving and departing aircraft".

"We will be contacting those guests who may be impacted but we encourage all guests to check the flight status page", the spokeswoman said.

Some flights have started up again, but Airport officials have warned passengers should expect lengthy delays. "Thanks for your patience", Sydney Airport tweeted at 7.24am. Planes due to fly from Melbourne to Sydney remained on the tarmac and delays were expected throughout the day, a Melbourne airport spokesman said.
