UK PM May says Brexit transition period to last around two years

In her speech, May promised to meet Britain's existing European Union budget commitments until 2020 and outlined new legal guarantees for the rights of around three million European Union nationals living in the UK.

"But it's not enough for sufficient progress, that's still a long way to go", the official said.

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said the two sides need to come to an agreement by November next year in order to allow time for it to be ratified by parliaments.

And it pleads for extra time - another two years or so - when we will have to pay to stay inside Europe, without actually being part of it.

Likely, she is also looking ahead to the next European Parliament elections in 2019, and the likelihood of discontented citizens in member states turning to Eurosceptic parties to voice their anger at how the European elite is mistreating smaller countries.

The Sinn Féin President said: "It was nothing but the same old story".

"I hope that the clarity provided today will allow for real progress at the next round of negotiations".

And then she talked about the issue of the supremacy of the British Courts.

What the European Union will not accept, as chief negotiator Michel Barnier has made clear, is the bespoke halfway house implied in phrases such as "frictionless trade" and "deep and special relationship".

He said Ireland and the EU's "27 partners" will examine the detail of the speech.

European Union citizens living in Britain, including 600,000 Italians, will still be welcome after Brexit, she said.

But he accepted that the United Kingdom would have to wait to take back powers from Brussels, telling reporters: "As the Prime Minister rightly said we are going to have a transition period and after that of course we are going to be taking back control of our borders, of our laws, of our destiny".

She said little on Ireland, beyond noting that no one wanted a return to a "hard border" with British-ruled Northern Ireland that could reignite tensions on the island.

"Angela Merkel is cautious about the Franco-German axis", says Roderich Kiesewetter, member of the German Bundestag for Baden-Württemberg and member of the Bundestag's committee on foreign affairs. "I think it is a genuine effort by the prime minister to move things along". "An agreement that will not be remembered for differences that we had, but for vision show; not only because of challenges we face, but by creativity that we use to overcome m; not only by end of a relationship, but by beginning of a new society". Now we are on our own. Requesting a transition period, I think, is also a step in the right direction.

"The UK will honor commitments we have made during the period of our membership", May said in a much-anticipated speech in the Italian city.
