His wife, Natalia, 42, has also been arrested after the discovery of the evidence at their home in Krasnodar.

Police uncovered human remains packed inside a freezer along with meat in jars in Southern Russia. He later confessed to at least two killings, but police believe there may be as many as thirty victims.

The phone was traced to the couple living in a hostel at a nearby military facility, where a raid uncovered body parts in a salt solution.

During interrogations, Natalia Baksheeva gave confessions and identified more than 30 victims from the photographs.

According to law enforcement, the husband and wife ate their victims' flesh and canned the remains. Tests validated the wife being an 'absolutely healthy adequate person who fully accounts for her actions'.

Some 19 remains of "human skin" were also discovered which had been "removed from dead people".

Seven packs of frozen body parts were found while some "meat" was discovered preserved in jars. Another bag was filled with the dead woman's possessions.

She has not been identified but is said to have been 35 and moved to Krasnodar from Omutinsk town in Kirov region.

The crime was disclosed on September 11, when a group of labor workers found a cell phone which contained selfies of the cannibals with female body parts. Investigators dated it from 28 December 1999 -further augmenting Dmitry and Natalia's claims of having taken part in cannibalism activities over the last 18 years.

The couple - a man and a woman - was detained, NTV news channel reports citing a source in the Investigative Committee.

"Each time we tried to enter their room, they started wild shouting and crying", a worker said, according to Mirror.

'Natalia is a scandalous woman, aggressive, so we did not risk it'.
