Cubs' Russell brings Cardinals fan fresh nachos after spilling into stands

The champagne will be on ice Tuesday night in Busch Stadium when the Cubs face the St. Louis Cardinals, with Chicago trying to clinch its second straight National League Central title.

Russell helped the Cubs build a big lead early, then made some friends out of rival fans.

Lester (12-8) gave up a run and five hits, walking two and fanning four. Chicago is 11-2 in its last 13 games and 19-8 in its last 27.

Not to be forgotten, the Cardinals were eliminated from NL Central contention with Monday's loss.

The St. Louis Cardinals need a victory here after splitting their last eight games. Now they have their sights set on the second NL Wild Card slot and currently trail the Rockies in that race.

Things did not go according to plan for one St. Louis fan who sought relief in said nachos, however.

"He got into some tough counts and had to hit more of the plate", St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said of Weaver.

Addison Russell ripped a three-run double down the right field line in the first, followed by Jason Heyward's RBI double to right-center.

Kris Bryant hit a home run and added two singles for Chicago. The team announced that Molina was in the concussion protocol.

Bottom Play (WPA): Willson Contreras flew out to left with one out in the first (-.044).

The only run Lester yielded came when Jedd Gyorko belted a 410-foot homer in the second inning, a blast that landed in the third deck in left field. Chicago got off the mark with four two-out runs in the first. Maddon thought Baez might be able to play Tuesday.

St. Louis rookie Luke Voit hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh.

Bryant hit his 29th homer of the season in the second with two outs for a 5-0 Cubs lead.

Cubs: Baez was back in the starting lineup.

Cardinals: Jose Martinez, who is out with sprained left thumb, will attempt to take some swings Tuesday to see if he can return to action this week. He is wearing a protective brace on his hand. Arrieta is 8-3 with a 2.06 ERA and 103 strikeouts in his career against the Cardinals. This has been the worst of Jon Lester's three years with the Chicago Cubs.
