Packers players post-game comments on the national anthem

White House chief of staff John Kelly was displeased with President Donald Trump's antagonizing NFL players who kneel in protest of police violence and racism during the national anthem, two administration officials said in a CNN report on Monday.

The players' protests were the latest twist in a bitter war of words between Trump and United States professional sports.

In addition to taking a jab at the league's TV ratings, which Trump said were highest before the games started as viewers watched to see if the "country will be disrespected", he also took a shot at the Dallas Cowboys for their protest on Monday night.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick pioneered this form of political expression, drawing national attention past year for remaining seated during "The Star-Spangled Banner" to protest racial injustice. While many athletes linked arms in unison, others joined Thomas in kneeling, and others still remained inside the locker room until the song concluded.

"We certainly respect the rights that people have", Sanders said.

Several Bills players took a knee during Sunday's game at New Era Field.

Governor Kim Reynolds today reacted with emotion to the ongoing controversy involving NFL players kneeling rather than standing during the playing of the national anthem. The more Trump doubled down, the larger the protest against him grew within the football community.

"If that's how they feel, then I believe there's nothing wrong with that", he said. "My great-uncle's bones are lying in the bottom of Pearl Harbor for this country, for this flag, for your freedom to play in the National Football League".

"It is about respect for our Country, Flag and National Anthem".

More than 200 NFL players and owners took a knee during the national anthem on Sunday, fueling another surge of ire from the president.

In a series of tweets Monday morning, the president said it's "about respect for our country..." Even those who didn't kneel Sunday - count Tom Brady among them - locked arms with their teammates, sending a crystal-clear message: I may not agree with your decision to kneel, but you are my teammate and above my own opinion I support your right to express yours. "But let's not disrespect the men and women who have served".

"If the President wants to engage in something positive, productive and constructive", Lockhart said, "he knows our number".
