Mr Reid, a safety for the San Francisco 49ers, defended his and other players' right to kneel on the field during the national anthem as a "respectful" protest movement in response to police brutality against people of colour.

NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart is firing back at President Donald Trump for attacking players who kneel during the national anthem.

He also said the league will continue to have the anthem played before every game.

As distracting as this tactic may be from the policymaking process, it is for those protesting the very story that matters: That an American president would chastise those seeking social equality as "sons of bitches" while claiming "very fine people" march under swastikas, stars and bars, represents to them a fundamental challenge to the American idea. -There remains wide disparity about how fans and teams should react to players who protest the anthem, with 9 percent agreeing with Trump that they should be fired and 18 percent saying they should be disciplined.

The protest of kneeling started by former San Francisco 49-er Colin Kaepernick who previous year chose to kneel during the anthem to protest police violence against African-Americans.

Coach McCarthy commented, "We talked about it in the team meeting last night and I actually read Mark Murphy's statement to the team and I thought our players stood behind that".

At her weekly news conference, Reynolds said she supports freedom of speech, but urges the players to respect the flag.

All of the Steelers remained in the locker room during the anthem except for offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva, who served three tours in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger.

The leader of the nation's largest veterans organization characterized professional athletes and other Americans who fail to show respect for the national anthem as "misguided and ungrateful".

Do NOT disrespect the American flag! LeBron James responded to Trump's tweet by calling him a "bum".

"For a week, they'll be the most popular person in this country", Trump griped about players kneeling during the national anthem.

Kaepernick appears to have added considerable bulk to his frame in his time away from the National Football League, and if/when an opportunity comes, don't expect his fitness won't be called into question.

"I'm afraid it's true", said Oliver.

On Sunday he said, "If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast".

"You can both be a patriot and also say, 'you know what, I have the right to speak my own mind.' So I give them a lot of credit", Murphy said.

"If the President wants to engage in something positive, productive and constructive", Lockhart said, "he knows our number".
