Air Force commandos, 2 militants killed in Hajin shootout

At least four local people dubbed as "militants" and an Indian Army soldier were killed in three separate gun-battles in India-held Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday. Two Air Force Garud personnel were also martyred in the action.

As the joint team of forces intensified the searches on wee hours, the hiding militants opened fired, triggering a fierce gunfight between the two sides.

Jammu and Kashmir Police, 13 personnel of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and nine paramilitary force personnel are deployed in the operation which is now underway.

The Chinar Corps Cdr and all ranks have expressed their condolences to the bereaved families.

Reportedly, both the militants belong to Lashkar-e-Toiba militant group. The slain militants were identified as Abu Bakr alias Ali Baba and Nasrullah Mir.




The government forces would conduct regular cordon and search operations in the Hajin for a few months now but were expecting to manage contact with the militants as the autumn set in.

J&K police chief S P Vaid has stated that around 85 militants were active in north Kashmir and majority of them are foreigners.

Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia confirmed the killing of two militants and two commandos and said the operation is in progress.

Almost 150 militants, including top commanders Sabzar Bhat, Junaid Matoo, Ayoub Lelhari, Bashir Lashkari, Abu Dujana and Mehmood Gaznavi and Umer Khalid have been killed by the security forces this year, which is highest in the last eight years.
