Britain, EU clash over next Brexit move

The U.K is increasingly anxious to move talks on to discussing future trade relations, but so far the European Union says there hasn't been "sufficient progress" on the major divorce terms - the size of the Brexit bill, the status of the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland and the rights of 3 million European Union citizens living in Britain and 1 million Britons in other member states.

The same applies to her determination to fight back Conservative Party doubts about her leadership.

British negotiators are in Belgium this week for the fifth round of stalled divorce talks, but Eurocrats have expressed doubt any meaningful progress will be made, saying today "the ball is in the UK's court".

European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said the responsibility for progress is "entirely in the United Kingdom court".

Mr Barnier tweeted on Friday that "Brexit negotiations next week should continue to advance", but he has warned there are still "significant divergences" and a lack of progress.

Backbench Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, a prominent Brexit supporter, said the Prime Minister had gone "as far as she could reasonably go" in what she had offered to the EU. "But I am optimistic we will receive a positive response". "So the ball is entirely in the United Kingdom court for the rest to happen".

According to a source familiar with the matter, May told business leaders that for her, a roughly two-year transitional agreement was non-negotiable.

Responding to backbench MP Jacob Rees-Mogg during Brexit questions in the House of Commons, the prime minister said Britain wanted an orderly withdrawal from the European Union and "that may mean we will start off with the ECJ governing the rules that we are part of".

German officials say that in recent months they have been spending just as much energy on how to handle that as on preparing for a negotiated solution.

The Prime Minister told another caller she had not been able to take honey to soothe her throat because she is diabetic.

Asked why she could not say she had changed her mind, given that she was leading the country into Brexit, she replied: "Yes and I'm Prime Minister ensuring I'm going to deliver Brexit for the British people".

On Monday, May confirmed she was rejecting Johnson's "red line" demand to take the United Kingdom out of the rule of the European Court of Justice during a transition phase after Brexit in 2019.

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Jo Swinson said: "It is staggering that even the Prime Minister isn't convinced by the Government's approach to Brexit".

"We hear from London that the United Kingdom government is preparing for a "no deal" scenario".

"I have long believed that the EU Commission primarily wants to punish Britain for daring to leave the organization", he said. "In my view it is rather important we get into a more close and more speedy process on concluding some of the issues".
