Kerala government soft on terror, says Ravi Shankar Prasad

Kerala government soft on terror, says Ravi Shankar Prasad

The minister said this in reference to a high-pitched war of words yesterday between two lawyers during the hearing of the sensitive Hadiya case, related to an inter-religious marriage in Kerala, in the apex court.

His comments came days after the state government informed the Supreme Court that its police had conducted a "thorough investigation" into the conversion of a Hindu woman to Islam and her subsequent marriage to a Muslim man and did not find material warranting the transfer of probe to the NIA.

But a NIA officer says it will need to go beyond establishing a link between people connected to the PFI after converting the partner to Islam and the inter-faith marriages.

The agency has sought a list from the Kerala Police of the converts who switched their faith since 2015 and subsequently entered into marriage with Muslims. The women, however, said that they were not married as yet even after conversion to Islam.

Reconverted to Hinduism, Athira alias Ayesha from Kasargod is said to have told interrogators that she was influenced by controversial televangelist and wanted accused Zakir Naik.

The top court had on August 16 directed the NIA to probe whether there was a wider pattern of alleged "love jihad" in the case.

Sources say that the second Athira from Palakad eloped with a Muslim man and converted to marry him.

"The Kerala High Court" on Tuesday while hearing the Hadiya case observed that "all inter-religious marriages can not be termed love jihad".

In both these cases, the NIA suspects the role of Popular Front of India (PFI).

Hadiya, formerly Akhila Ashokan, converted to Islam and married Shafin Jahan in 2016.

Her father approached the high court in May, alleging in his petition that there was a "well-oiled systematic mechanism" for conversion and Islamic radicalisation. The one's who converted were Bestin Vincent (Yahiya) and Merrin Jacob (Mariyam), as well as Bexen Vincent (Isa) and Nimisha (Fatima).

In fact, the top court had also question the Kerala High Court how it could annul the marriage of Hadiya and Shafeen Jahan under Article 26. We reported her case to the Supreme Court.

So far 40 PFI activists have been questioned in this connection with the case.
