We will still accept the old round pound coins, says Wolverhampton shopkeeper

And bakery favourite Greggs will also accept the coins and have not yet decided when they will stop accepting the round pound.

THE old one-pound coin is being phased out completely on Sunday (15) but United Kingdom businesses said they have been given too little time to switch to the new one and many are planning to defy the deadline.

The discount supermarket chain Aldi is to accept the old £1 coins in its United Kingdom stores for two weeks after they cease to be legal tender.

While banks and Post Offices will continue to accept your old pound coins, money saving expert-type Martin Lewis explains: "Carting a bag of coins to the bank is a real faff - particularly if there isn't a branch near you".

The process of replacing the coins - which have been in circulation for 33 years - began in March with the release of of the 12-sided version.

And the switch has raised concern that piggy banks, coin jars and savings could soon be worthless if not spent/cashed in.

Royal Mint are now encouraging all old pound coin owners to spend, bank or donate their coins before the deadline.

Retailer Poundland has also said that it will continue to accept the coins up until the end of the month. After that time, businesses can stop accepting it and will not automatically be giving it as change for notes.

The coins will lose their legal tender status on Sunday.

The Post Office said customers can continue to deposit their old round pounds into any of their usual high street bank accounts through any post office - even after October 15 - "until further notice".

And a Tesco spokesperson said: "We've been updating our systems ready for the new pound coins, but to help customers who still have the old coins, we'll continue to accept round pounds at our tills and self-service machines for an additional week".

Baroness Neville Rolfe, commercial secretary to the Treasury, said: "Our message is clear - if you have a round one pound coin sitting at home or in your wallet, you need to spend it or return it to your bank before October 15".

Charity box collectors and those who save loose change have been urged to go through their coins and sort out the old from the new to make sure that they do not miss out.
