Apple cleared to build $1B green energy data center in Ireland

Apple cleared to build $1B green energy data center in Ireland

The data centres in Athenry and Denmark's Jutland are to be host to popular Apple services such as iCloud, Apple Music, Siri and various e-commerce activities.

"This is a very important step for Athenry and for Apple", said Paul Keane, who heads up the Athenry for Apple Facebook page, which has over 4,000 members.

Apple's data centre ambitions for the west of Ireland are now set to blossom.

The case will be mentioned again next week and the opposing residents may yet appeal today's decision, but Mr Doherty says that's for another day and he hopes today's result will lead to more investment in the west. The Danish site is understood to be already up and running.

A decision on Apple's Irish data centre was expected to be passed in July but a shortage of High Court judges pushed the verdict back to October.

Galway County Council granted permission in Sept 2015 but that was appealed to An Bord Pleanála. All looked good when the company was granted the "final" go-ahead last summer, until three residents filed a High Court appeal.

When the project was announced, Apple said it meant to spend €1.7 billion (£1.5 billion) on a data centre in Ireland and another in Denmark, with each one costing €850 million (£762 million).

Following oral hearings the planning authority confirmed the permission in August of past year.

The first challenge, instigated by environmental engineer Allan Daly and local legal expert Sinead Fitzpatrick, saw the pair contest an earlier decision by the Irish planning body, An Bord Plenala (ABP), to grant Apple permission to proceed with the build.

They claimed the Board's August 2016 permission for the development was invalid on grounds including alleged failure to carry out a proper Environmental Impact Assessment. Around the same time, thousands of people in Athenry marched in favour of the data centre.

The €850m investment has been held up for years while a similar project in Denmark - originally announced alongside the Galway plans - is now close to completion.

Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
