Apple smart glasses: Tim Cook says AR tech not ready

Apple smart glasses: Tim Cook says AR tech not ready

Their field of view and the quality of their displays, he said, aren't there yet.

Cook's comments are interesting, especially given that the rumors surrounding Apple's interest in smart glasses have increased steadily over the a year ago. It doesn't enable anything that has never been done before in AR, but it is meant to greatly increase ease of development of AR applications for one of the most robust software markets in the world-the iOS App Store.

Cook has always been evangelical about AR. The company officially introduced its ARKit in iOS 11 which has huge potential in achieving operations that were previously not practical.

In an interview with the British newspaper The Independent, Cook compared the arrival of ARKit to when the App Store first arrived in 2008. "If you think about companies that offer a fair number of shoes, and [if a customer] sees a shoe and goes I want that one, you just want to point and [buy]".

In a wide-ranging interview published this week, Cook talked about ARKit, the recently introduced framework for iOS to facilitate augmented reality technologies, and how the company sees this nascent stage, which its rivals Google, Facebook, and Microsoft are also increasingly eyeing. But none have been advanced enough to compare to the experience of trying on a attractive matte foundation or tricky pair of pants in store. Cook adds that he doesn't think "anything will be untouched" by AR as the technology evolves and matures. That being the case, Cook said that any type of smart glasses product Apple would release today wouldn't be anything that Apple or consumers "would be satisfied with". "And as with all of its products, Apple will only ship something if it feels it can do it 'in a quality way'". While stating AR "absolutely will" be a part of future shopping, he said Apple isn't actively pursuing a presence in the retail space. But when asked about a possible AR smart glasses which would take advantage of the ARKit, Cook was not very forthcoming. He did not give any serious hints if the company was indeed working on AR smart glasses. "I can tell you that the technology itself doesn't exist to do [AR glasses] in a quality way", Cook said to Vogue after dismissing "rumours and gossip" about the idea.

He also talked about the AR glasses, which the company has been reportedly working on. "We don't give rats about being first, we want to be best in creating people's experiences".
