Disney's Movies Anywhere launches with five of six studios on board

Disney's Movies Anywhere launches with five of six studios on board

It follows in the footsteps of the UltraViolet locker model (which studios abandoned for superior Disney tech) and the previous proprietary Disney Movies Anywhere.

Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures, Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros, Twenty-First Century Fox Inc's 20th Century Fox and Sony Corp's Sony Pictures Entertainment have signed on to the effort, the statement said. Content from Amazon Video, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu can be brought into the Movies Anywhere app, which is great for anyone with a fragmented collection spanning more than one of those services.

Disney's (NYSE:DIS) Movies Anywhere has just launched, a digital movie locker and app launched with backing from five of the six major Hollywood studios, as expected. It has support from 5 major Hollywood studios, but more importantly also from 4 digital retailers where users already have movie libraries. You can find our more details about Movies Anywhere at the link below.

Per the release, "Using the free Movies Anywhere app and website, consumers can access all their eligible movies by connecting their Movies Anywhere account with their participating digital retailer accounts".

The old apps will be renamed as Movies Anywhere. "And as Movies Anywhere continues to add more studios, retailers and platforms, the entertainment possibilities are endless".

He further added, "Consumers never have to remember where they purchased a film or which device they can watch it on because all of their eligible movies will be centralized within their Movies Anywhere library and available across platforms".

Movies Anywhere will initially feature access to a library of over 7,300 digital movies, along with previews and film extras.

Google invites users to link their accounts now to take advantage of this offer, however, the Movies Anywhere website doesn't appear to have officially launched and the Google Play app page that Google links to also isn't live at the time of writing.

To celebrate the Google partnership, you can even snag yourself five free movies: Big Hero 6, Ghostbusters (2016), Ice Age, Jason Bourne and The Lego Movie.
