Violence erupts in Kenya over new election law

Violence erupts in Kenya over new election law

"President Uhuru Kenyatta insisted elections must go on".

Protests have been taking place nearly daily since the decision in a country that still has grim memories of post-election violence, with a disputed 2007 poll prompted politically motivated tribal clashes that left some 1,100 dead.

The Kenyan parliament passed a controversial amendment to it's election laws on Wednesday.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, the electoral commission said the former Prime Minister is still in the contest despite announcing he had bowed out.

His ruling means President Uhuru Kenyatta may still have a challenger on October 26, when the re-run is scheduled despite the withdrawal of top opposition candidate on Raila Odinga over allegations of bias.

The Supreme Court last month rejected the August election in which Mr Kenyatta was declared the victor after Mr Odinga challenged the results, saying hackers infiltrated the electoral commission's computer system to manipulate the vote in Mr Kenyatta's favour.

To maintain pressure, his opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition called supporters to the street, saying protests would take place every day from next week. Protesters threw stones and were met with police tear gas.

The country was yet to recover from the effect of the Supreme Court ruling nullifying Uhuru Kenyatta's victory and order for a rerun. Honorable Raila Odinga and his running mate sent a letter dated 10 October 2017 indicating that they had chose to withdraw from the fresh Presidential election.

Tension between Kenyatta's ruling Jubilee Party and Odinga's opposition party have risen since the initial August election.

That judgement stated that if a candidate dies or withdraws from the fresh election, the IEBC must begin presidential nominations from scratch.
