Germany enter knockouts with hard-fought win over Guinea

Coming into the match here on Friday, both Germany and Guinea had the chance to advance to the next round.

The Junior Menas make it through to the Round of 16 courtesy of their opening 1-0 win against South Korea, which guaranteed their historic presence in the next round.

Two of the other switches brought attacking flair to Germany's wings on the night - Hertha Berlin's Dennis Jastrzembski was electric on the left, while Nicolas Kuhn of RB Leipzig played his role on the right to perfection, sometimes dropping deep behind captain Jann-Fiete Arp and switching places with Arp every now and then for variety.

Guinea kicked off the second half and started it strongly as they had ended the first half, but slowly Germany got hold of the match and started to attack relentlessly. "We were very poor in that game, and the reaction back home wasn't good".

Iran have scored 10 goals in the tournament so far. "Guinea is a very fast and strong team, but we also matched them", said Wuck. "It looks one-sided at first glance, but they were made to work hard for it, often thinking on their feet and changing plans to accommodate a tricky opponent".

Germany, who have qualified for the Federation Internationale de Football Association U-17 World Cup as fifth-place finisher from Europe via a play-off, began their campaign with an unconvincing 2-1 win over Costa Rica before slumping to an embarrassing 0-4 defeat to Iran.

Iran will definitely miss the services of Mohammad Ghobeishavi for their round of 16 clash as he received the second yellow card in the last three games, that hands him a one-match suspension.

"The next rounds are the most important where we will face tougher teams".

"It's a do or die battle for us now and our boys know it", stated Costa Rica coach Breansse Camacho.

Guinea coach Souleymane Camera admitted the better team won. They will travel to New Delhi for their round of 16 match against Colombia on October 16.

"We have had at least 30 chances across the three games, against Iran, Costa Rica and tonight against Germany".

"We should not get carried away with the victory against the Germans and instead focus on Costa Rica who always look risky in front of the goal with their skillful play", he added. The German coach hailed the pitch at Kochi and said the "pitch could be compared to European standards, and the players were able to play better here". We made mistakes in the first half and conceded two penalties. But I think my players are very strong and very fast.
