Graft cases: Maryam Nawaz, Capt (r) Safdar reach NAB court

Maryam Nawaz and her spouse Capt Safdar have arrived at the court amid tight security and extensive protocol for the hearing of three graft references. After the rejection of petition, it is highly likely that Sharif, Maryam and Safdar would be indicted tomorrow during the hearing, unless the court delays it.

Chaos and racket by lawyers and supporters of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz forced the Accountability Court in Islamabad to postpone indictment of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar in a graft case on Friday.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) lawyers asked the court to send Safdar to jail on judicial remand but the court granted him bail and ordered him to pay Rs 50,000 for surety bonds.

During the last hearing on October 9, the Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir declared Sharif's sons - Hasan and Husain - absconders for failing to appear before the court despite warnings.

Kulsoom, who is suffering from throat cancer, has undergone three surgeries in the United Kingdom so far.

The court has made a decision to declare Hassan and Hussain fugitives in case they fail to appear before the accountability court within a month.

Sharif and his sons have been nominated in all three references, while Maryam and her husband have been named only in a reference related to the family's London flats.

Maryam, who is being groomed as Sharif's political successor, appeared in the court for the first time today.

As the hearing began, the lawyers began protesting inside the court.

As she left the court premises, Maryam Nawaz told reporters that she will ask the Interior Ministry to come up with a strategy to keep such events from occurring in the future.

NAB's Rawalpindi branch prepared two references regarding the Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metals Establishment, and the almost dozen companies owned by the Sharif family.

Sharif skipped the hearing as he has not returned from London where he is busy looking after his wife Kulsoom.

The judge rejected the request of Nawaz Sharif's counsel to adjourn the cases for two weeks so that his client could return from London and appear before it.
