Jason Garrett hasn't talked to Jerry Jones about anthem mandate

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones threatened to sit-out players who chose to protest during the national anthem, just weeks after kneeling side-by-side with them.

Jones made the announcement following the team's 35-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers Sunday, saying the National Football League can not tolerate its players disrespecting the flag by kneeling or linking arms as popularized by Colin Kaepernick.

"If there is anything that is disrespectful to the flag then we will not play", Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News". Period. We're going to respect the flag and I'm going to create the perception of it.

Jones, who has owned the team for almost 28 years, says the issue is truly a 'workplace issue.' In fact, Jones says the edict to stand is in the Cowboys operating manual.

'We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. Just so we're clear. All of them stood during the anthem, with arms still locked.

Following the Cowboys' gesture, Trump said he spoke to Jones - who donated to Trump's campaign - and that the team will stand for the anthem going forward. It wasn't until roughly 20 minutes before kickoff that Jones mentioned the pre-anthem kneel that the players accepted.

No Cowboys players have kneeled during the anthem, although defensive linemen David Irving and Damontre Moore raised their fist after the anthem was played.

"We made our expression", Jones said on Sunday.

Afterwards, Pence tweeted that he wouldn't "dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag or our National Anthem". I'm very supportive of the team but under no circumstances-under no circumstances-will the Dallas Cowboys, I don't care what happens, under no circumstances as an organization or as coaches and players, not support and stand and recognize and honor the flag. We've always done that. "We've kneeled in support of each other before the national anthem, and we've stood for the national anthem. We'll stand for the flag".

"Again, we want to approach the anthem in a very respectful way".

"I haven't given any and don't have communication publicly about what I'm doing with the players". The league has said it doesn't plan to punish players over anthem protests. And my understanding of what both of those guys did based on the conversations I had with them was that occurred after the anthem.

Trump's tweet came hours after ESPN host Jemele Hill, who last month referred to him as a "white supremacist", was suspended for her own comments about the Cowboys, in which she suggested a boycott of their advertisers over Jones's stance.

Other NFL team owners have followed suit, as Dolphins owner Stephen Ross agreed with Jones, saying Sunday that Trump's statements completely altered the objective behind kneeling during the anthem. "I know we've been very pleased with the way we've handled it. our players as a team, as an organization, the way we've handled obviously a very hard situation".
