Swedish police have ruled out terror as a motive after a gunman opened fire on a market in the town of Trelleborg, injuring at least seven people.

Police launched a major operation following the dramatic shooting in Trelleborg, Sweden, at about 10.30pm (local time).

Police said two of the injured were hurt during a shooting and that a total of four people were taken to the hospital late on Thursday (Friday morning, NZ time). The police initially said that the four victims suffered gunshot wounds, but have later clarified their statement.

The town is known for past gang violence and that the incident is not being investigated as terrorism, according to AP. There are several people who have encountered injuries.

Witnesses reportedly said they heard a "loud bang" in the area. We saw someone running outside.

Another neighbour told the newspaper: 'There were many shots. It's packed with police cars in the street'.

'We are blocking certain areas and will conduct an investigation.
