Woman who swam in crocodile-infested creek feared dead

Far North police Acting Insp Ed Lukin said clothing and a walking stick with her name on it, along with the remains were discovered during a search of the small creek this morning.

Police say they will continue to search in hopes that she may still be alive, but hold grave concerns.

He said the remains were undergoing forensic testing in Cairns to identify whether they were human.

Far North police acting inspector Ed Lukin said "Because of the proximity of these items and this unknown material located by this creek bank we can not rule out a croc attack".

Anne Cameron, 79, was reported missing from an aged care facility near Port Douglas, north of Cairns, on Tuesday.

Police suspect she wandered into tropical forest and became disoriented, triggering an extensive search.

The area where the items were found is isolated and near a creek well off the beach.

"I do believe she suffers from dementia, it has happened previously with her and she has sought the assistance of members of the public to be returned back to Ozcare", he said.

Ozcare, the company that runs the aged care facility, declined to comment.

"The family is devastated and has asked that their privacy be respected at this time", he said.

"We would like to sincerely thank the Police, SES, Fire Brigade and everyone in the Port Douglas community who helped us in the search for Anne", she posted to a Port Douglas Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.

Crocodiles in the region are territorial and known to be extremely aggressive.

Police suspect that Ms Cameron was attacked after walking into bushland about 2km from the nursing home.
