Bill Edgar: Pep Guardiola's prolific Manchester City make history

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said he is anxious his players could be "distracted" by praise from Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola.

"I think that some of our players should sit out this game, with Inter only around the corner and being just as important".

The two sides come into the Champions League Group F meeting at the Etihad Stadium in buoyant mood, both sitting pretty at the summit of their respective domestic tables.

"Of course, if they think that, they will be stupid", Guardiola told British media. "I can announce to you which players are going to play for Napoli against us". I was particularly anxious about the criticism we received after losing [to Shakhtar Donetsk] in Ukraine because it seemed like something tragic had happened, whereas all we did was lose by one goal.

"The difference is that Shakhtar maybe wait a little bit. I'm very happy to have the opportunity to play this kind of game".

Whatever happens in that contest, Napoli will head to England in midweek in buoyant mood and confident that they can be the ones to offer a first bump in the road for Guardiola's Manchester City juggernaut.

But on Tuesday they face a stern test at home against free-scoring Serie A leaders Napoli, who have had an even better start to their league campaign with eight straight wins, compared to City's seven wins and one draw.

"Day by day much better", Pep said on Aguero, adding; "Yesterday [Sunday] he did an unbelievable training session, the day before Stoke was good but not flawless, yesterday was really good".

They have now found the target 29 times in the English top-flight, to hit a 123-year high, while also collecting back-to-back wins and two clean sheets in Europe.

"We hope for a great performance and will be concentrated in Manchester". The Germany worldwide has featured in Man City's last three games and is nearing full fitness following a lengthy injury layoff.
