Two officials fired after United dragging scandal

Two Aviation Security Officers involved in the infamous, violent dragging of Dr. David Dao from a United flight in April have been fired, according to the Office of Inspector General.

United had asked Dao and three other passengers to leave the plane in Chicago to make room for crew members who needed to get to Louisville to work on a flight, according to passengers.

The Office of Inspector General said in the report that as a result of the office's findings and recommendations, the department fired an officer who "improperly escalated the incident" and a sergeant involved in removing facts from a report. The other suspended officers filed a grievance, then withdrew it and resigned.

The report did not reveal the identities of the officers.

The doctor, David Dao, hired Chicago personal-injury lawyer Thomas Demetrio of Corboy & Demetrio before reaching a confidential settlement with the airline.

"The investigation further established that the sergeant deliberately removed material facts from the third" officer's "To/From Report" and approved reports without all essential information", the inspector general said. Security officers surrounded his seat shortly thereafter.

The incident aboard United Express Flight 3411 was videotaped by other passengers and widely shared online. "It seemed to me the policies and procedures would have been tweaked the next day".

There is a lesson to be learned here for police officers at all levels.

Dao has already settled with United for an undisclosed amount.

"As we have clearly stated, the department is taking every action in our power to ensure that an incident like this never, ever occurs again", said aviation spokeswoman Lauren Huffman, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"In firing him, perhaps it will send a clear message to police and airline personnel all over the world that unnecessary violence is not the way to handle passenger matters", Mr Demetrio said.

The viral video of the fracas became an worldwide symbol of passenger discontent with the flying experience and damaged Chicago's reputation as an global tourist destination.
