Twitter just announced some big changes around political ads

Twitter will now clearly label political ads on its social platform and is committing to stricter guidelines for ad targeting.

Twitter said on Tuesday that it would bring more transparency to advertisements on its site, including political ads, in the latest response by a technology company to criticism about its role in spreading foreign propaganda during the 2016 presidential campaign. The new center will also have a dedicated section for electioneering ads - meaning ads that clearly refer to a candidate or a political party connected to that candidate. Twitter did not share what the specifics were in the blog post. Users will also be able to see who paid for the ad, how much was spent, and who it was targeted to. Facebook said last month that accounts connected to Russian Federation purchased around 3,000 political ads for $100,000 between June of 2015 and May of 2017. The company announced a number of new policies Tuesday that it will roll out in the coming months to help people better understand who is advertising on Twitter, and why.

All of these moves have been made after a slow awakening by the general public and the USA government as to the power of and lack of regulation around digital ads following the 2016 election.

Twitter said last month it had suspended about 200 Russia-linked accounts as it investigated online efforts to influence last year's US election.

Twitter has come forward saying it needs and will do more to combat misinformation on its network. USA regulators will have to answer whether they're fine with Twitter's financial slaps on the wrists as punishment for, say, rich foreign actors who meddle in United States elections. There's also the matter of the announcement admitting that its policies could be violated by default, with promises of "stronger penalties for advertisers who violate policies". However, Twitter then backed down. We thank these members and others for their foresight in drawing attention to these issues as well as Chairman Hurd (R-TX) for holding a public hearing today on political advertising laws and regulations to facilitate a thoughtful discussion on disclosure policy.

Democratic U.S. Senator Mark Warner said from his Twitter account that the moves by the company were a "good first step" but he added that Congress should make the disclosures mandatory by approving legislation he is co-sponsoring.
