Eve Online dev CCP ditches virtual reality development

The company made the official announcement via press release, revealing that its offices in both Atlanta, GA in the USA, and Newcastle in the United Kingdom, will be closed down and sold as CCP Games pivots to a focus on both PC and mobile titles. CCP has provided severance packages and job placement assistance for all those affected.

"CCP Games is restructuring its studio locations worldwide, driven primarily by reduced investments in virtual reality and an increased focus on PC and mobile games".

Although little information is available about this shuttering, Icelandic outlet Morgunbladid reports what we heard at EVE Vegas: It's because CCP is stepping back from VR.

Eve Online developer CCP Games has revealed (thanks PCGamesN) that it is no longer developing any VR titles for the time being, which explains the recent EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone release, dropping the VR requirement of the spaceship dogfighting shooter.

The odd thing about the news is that CCP's focus seemed to be in VR for about the last four years.

The move is not a good sign for the current state of virtual reality.

It's a notable recoil from one of VR's biggest developers, who put out Valkyrie, Gunjack and Sparc in a short space of time.

Valkyrie is a multiplayer spaceship dogfighting shooter set in the EVE Universe for Playstation VR (PS4), and Oculus Rift/HTC Vive (PC), using VR technology to give players the experience of being an actual pilot in an EVE space fighter. The studio in Atlanta, responsible for another VR title named Sparc, is already closed.

It was one of the first gaming companies to embrace VR with the launch of "EVE Valkyrie" in March 2016 and it writes on its website that it thinks the technology "will play an increasingly important role in gaming, and beyond, in the years to come". In fact, there's no game that's better in VR that can't be played without the headset.

"We have been front and center in the second wave of VR", Pétursson said to Polygon.

CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson stated that future PC and mobile gaming initiatives will be centralized to offices in Reykjavík, Shanghai, and London.

Note, too, that CCP's VR games are among the most expensive on the market.
