Pokémon Go developer Niantic working on Harry Potter game

It's called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

The maker of one of the biggest mobile games around is joining forces with one of the biggest forces in pop culture. A new report says that Niantic Labs, the creators of the hit mobile AR game Pokémon GO, are now developing a new AR game called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite for a launch sometime next year. Each game plays a little differently. The details are still thin, but Niantic is co-developing the game with Warner Bros. Not much is known about the upcoming AR game, just that Niantic will heavily draw inspiration from Ingress, its less popular take on this type of games. The game still has an active user base of 65 million people each month, is updated frequently, and has established a regular presence on the list of the 20 most lucrative apps.

It makes sense - like Pokémon, Harry Potter is a huge franchise with years and years worth of stuff which fans will no doubt want to collect.

There was a rumor that Niantic would be working on a Harry Potter game a year ago, but TechCrunch reports that though that rumor was debunked at the time, the game is officially in development now.

What do you think about the early reveal of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite? The idea is that it would let players virtually immerse themselves in Rowling's magical world, overlaid on their real-world surroundings via smartphones.
