MLB Rumors: Marlins Talking Giancarlo Stanton Trade With These Four Teams

"They're definitely in play", the source said of the Red Sox, who are at least exploring the possibility of acquiring the Majors' reigning home run king.

An earlier report from Friday said the Red Sox had been in on "preliminary talks" on Stanton, along with the Cardinals, Phillies and Giants.

The Miami Marlins apparently have a trade partner in mind with regard to the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes. Whether the slugger exercises his full no-trade clause remains to be seen, but it certainly seems unlikely that he'd opt for a team that hasn't surfaced above.500 since 2012.

Morosi points out that the Phillies are uniquely suited to take on the remainder of Stanton's 13-year, $325 million contract, as they now have a $6.35 million payroll heading into the 2018 season.

As the Marlins prepare to open shop Monday at the General Managers meetings in Orlando, they're already talking to a handful of teams about Stanton. Other teams could be in the mix as well, or enter the fray later. The payroll is expected to be reduced by about one-third this offseason under the new ownership.

The Red Sox have other options than Stanton. It should be noted that if a well-heeled team such as the Red Sox were to take on all or almost all of his contract, the return cost in players or prospects would not be prohibitive in terms of the Red Sox losing a blue-chop prospect or current young major-leaguer.
