Arvind Kejriwal asks Amarinder Singh for a meeting in Chandigarh

Arvind Kejriwal asks Amarinder Singh for a meeting in Chandigarh

Delhi Rural Development Minister Gopal Rai on November 13 took on the Central Govt and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the increasing levels of air pollution in the National Capital. "You (Kejriwal) may feel free to call me to fine tune a mutually convenient date, time and venue for the meeting", he wrote.

The Aam Aadmi Party's leader came a day after Khattar accepted his request for a meeting to discuss the issue of stubble burning.

The Delhi government is blaming stubble burning by farmers in Punjab and Haryana for the smog and air pollution in the national capital and surrounding areas which have led to environment and health concerns for people.

The Delhi chief minister has been seeking a meeting with his counterparts from Haryana and Punjab over the last few days to find a solution to stubble burning in the neighbouring states, a major source to high pollution levels in Delhi.

"In fact, your reference to the helplessness of farmers in Punjab and Haryana in stubble burning betrays an inability to rise above short-term electoral interests", the Haryana chief minister wrote.

The Haryana CM has asked me to see him in Chandigarh on Wednesday, the AAP supremo said.

In a letter to Kejriwal, Khattar said some 40,000 families cultivate around 40,000 hectares in Delhi.

The petitioner lawyer has sought vacuum cleaning and sprinkling of the roads, fruitful use of the stubble instead of burning them, use of electricity-driven vehicles instead of those using costly fuels - diesel and petrol - contributing to pollution and focus on solar energy instead of thermal power plants.

He added that no single person, organisation or government could improve the quality of air. Khattar in his letter said he would be available in Delhi on Monday and till Tuesday noon. "A meeting between just the two of us makes no sense to me, unless it is facilitated by the Centre and involves the CMs of other states", he had told the Print. "Such collective problems require everyone to do their bit".

The Delhi CM has earlier alleged that both Punjab and Haryana CMs have no time to discuss the crop burning issue.
