GI tag says West Bengal is where the 'rosogolla' originated

The fight between the two states over the sweet ended after Chennai-base Geographical Indications (GI) Registry announced that the sweet originated in West Bengal and not Odisha. The GI tag prevents unauthorized use of the geographical indication and boosts exports by giving it a unique identity.

West Bengal's chief minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the decision saying in a Twitter post it was "sweet news for us all".

Sanjay Bhattacharya, deputy controller of patents and designs Kolkata said, "The issue has been settled under the GI Act that authenticates a product relating to either a geographical location or community". Virtually every dignitary visiting West Bengal - from Fidel Castro to Diego Maradona - was offered this signature sweet during state dinners.

The Odisha government even launched a social-media campaign #RasagollaDibasa on July 30, 2015, to celebrate its origin.

In West Bengal, a confectioner named Nobin Chandra Das is widely known as the one who created the sweet in the 1860s. Their key argument was that the Bengalis learnt how to make the chhena - the cottage cheese which is the chief ingredient of rosogulla - from the Portuguese and were the first to experiment with it for their candies.

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, "unnecessary controversy was initiated and a tug of war started for Rosogolla".

Countering Odisha's claim, the Bengal government applied for GI tag for the sweet, asserting there was "ample" documentary evidence to prove the sweet belongs to Bengal.

What is a GI tag?
