Russia's Defence Ministry to investigate wrong photos used on Syria statement

Russia's defence ministry on Tuesday posted images it said proved the USA was aiding the Islamic State jihadist group in the Middle East, but social media users pointed out they included a still from a videogame. The tweet says that "the ministry of defence shows irrefutable evidence that United States are actually covering ISIS combat units to recover their combat capabilities, redeploy, and use them to promote American Interests in the Middle East".

Researchers at Conflict Intelligence Team, a nonprofit group that investigates Russian military activities, subsequently reported that three other images shared by Russia as "irrefutable evidence" of US forces assisting the Islamic State were actually taken from video released by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense in 2016.

From watching the video at the top that shows a clip from AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron, a video that was uploaded back in 2015, not anywhere close to November 9, 2017 as the images from the tweet would suggest.

Asked about Russian allegations of the US helping Islamic State around Albu Kamal, Colonel Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the USA -led coalition fighting Islamic State, said: "The Russian ministry of defense statements are about as accurate as their air campaign and I think that is a reason for them to start, you know, coming out with their latest barrage of lies".

Another image purporting to show the same convoy in Syria was actually taken from a 2016 video published by Iraq's defence ministry, which said it was an Islamic State convoy fleeing Fallujah, Iraq, Conflict Intelligence Team investigators found.

Moscow has previously accused Washington of "pretending" to fight IS in Iraq, allowing jihadists into neighbouring Syria where Russian Federation and the U.S. have backed opposing sides in the bloody conflict.

The Kremlin denied that Putin had shown the wrong footage to the American director Oliver Stone during one of a series of interviews.
