Sock keeps hopes alive with win over erratic Cilic

Cilic, who won the 2014 U.S. Open, broke the American twice to win the first set but found himself adrift in the second as Sock levelled the round-robin match with two breaks of his own.

Continuing to defy Father Time, Roger Federer has seen off generation next to surge into a record 14th semi-final in 15 appearances at the ATP Finals.

"I wouldn't be out here playing, competing if I didn't think I could give myself a chance to win tournaments, to be here", Sock said.

Cilic looked set to come out on top when he claimed the first mini-break of the tie-break, but Sock showed incredible athleticism to dart in and guide away a victor after a Cilic shot struck the net cord and he won five points in a row to seal a hard-fought victory.

Federer will be meeting Zverev later on Tuesday in the other match in the Boris Becker group.

"Definitely not a great record, but I felt that I played even well a year ago", Cilic said.

But Zverev is setting tongues wagging after an impressive year in which he has won five tournaments, and Federer was forced to repel three break points against the German as early as the opening game.

Cilic, playing in his third ATP Finals, made the first breakthrough in the decider to help the Croatian move to a 3-0 lead but Sock recovered his composure to claim three games on the bounce, including a fourth break of Cilic's serve. "I'm relieved and I know now I can play freely against Marin Cilic knowing that I have qualified".

Sock, the American number one, came from nowhere to reach the end-of-season event, reaching London by winning the Paris Masters - and breaking a run of European success at Masters events stretching back to 2010. You make me feel at home.

"That was a tough one for sure", added Sock who will look to go to 2-1 when he faces Zverev on Thursday (November 16). The fire alarm went off at 4:00 am and we had to exit the building.

Sock's nothing-to-lose mentality helped him, too, and there were deft drop shots and unexpected selections from the back of the court, with some fun with the crowd along the way as he kept his hopes of a semifinal place alive.
