MLB Removing Prospects From Braves

Major League Baseball came down hard on the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday for multiple violations of the worldwide amateur signing rules, making 13 players who had previously signed with the organization free agents.

The Braves, where Coppolella has worked for the past three years in his former role, signed a dozen players according to Major League Baseball without going through the proper channels. Former GM John Coppolella, who lost his job amid the investigation, has been barred for life, while former scout Gordon Blakely will be suspended for one year.

Commissioner Rob Manfred ruled that the Braves must forfeit 13 worldwide prospects, including highly touted Kevin Maitan, an infielder from Venezuela who signed for $4.25 million in 2016.

"In order to remedy these violations, I am releasing these players from their contracts with the Braves and declaring them free agents eligible to sign with any other Club", Manfred said. Former Braves Special Assistant Gordon Blakeley, who was the team's worldwide scouting chief, is suspended from performing services for any team for one year.

"During the 2015-16 global signing period, the Braves signed five players subject to the Club's signing bonus pool to contracts containing signing bonuses lower than the bonuses the Club had agreed to provide the players".

Major League Baseball has confirmed in a statement that the Braves will lose the rights to shortstop prospect Kevin Maitan and 12 other worldwide signees.

Along with Maitan, the other players declared free agents are Juan Contreras, Yefri del Rosario, Abrahan Gutierrez, Juan Carlos Negret, Yenci Pena, Yunior Severino, Livan Soto, Guillermo Zuniga, Brandol Mezquita, Angel Rojas, Antonio Sucre and Ji Hwan Bae.

The Braves also suffered penalties for circumventing global signing rules in recent years.

"As we expressed last week, our organization has not lived up to the standard our fans expect from us and that we expect from ourselves.", the team's statement said. "We are instituting the changes necessary to prevent this from ever happning again and remain excited about the future of Braves baseball".

The Braves' estimated signing-bonus pool of $4.75 million for the 2020-21 season will also be cut in half by the league.
