Malta: ten suspects arrested over reporter's murder

Maltese police have arrested eight suspects in the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said, nearly two months after her auto was blown up while she was driving it.

Muscat said that all of the initial eight suspects are Maltese nationals and have criminal records or were known to the police, reports Malta Today online.

Maltese officers now have 48 hours to investigate the individuals, with searches ongoing, before they have to be released - or charged.

Addressing an urgent press conference in Castille, Muscat refused to provide details on the arrests, including on whether the people are suspected to be the executors or the masterminds, arguing such details risk prejudicing the investigations.

Caruana Galizia was killed close to her home on 16 October in an attack which shocked the country. The assassination triggered off a series of protests in Malta.

"During this operation, 8 persons were arrested" the statement said, adding that they faced "reasonable suspicion in connection with involvement in the murder" of Caruana Galizia.

The premier, who had described the slain journalist as his biggest adversary, reiterated his commitment to bringing her killers to justice.

"I am committed to doing so more than ever".

The force of the blast reduced her auto to pieces and catapulted the journalist's body into a nearby field, witnesses said.

Political blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed when her vehicle was blown up.

She also wrote about Maltese links to the so-called Panama Papers leaks about offshore financial havens.

In her final post on Running Commentary, the widely-read blog she had written since 2008, Caruana Galizia voiced despair over the cronyism and sleaze she saw engulfing her island nation.

She is survived by her lawyer husband, Peter, and three sons.
