San Francisco Officials Remove Pier 14 Steinle Memorial

During the 2016 presidential campaign, then-candidate Trump and others pointed to Steinle's death as reasons why the country's immigration laws should be tightened.

Twitter users turned to the hashtags #BoycottSanFrancisco and #kateswall to demand construction of the U.S. -Mexico border wall that Trump has called for.

In June, the U.S. House of Representatives passed "Kate's Law", named for the 32-year-old Steinle, that would increase penalties for illegal immigrants who return to the United States. Steinle's funeral took place in 2015.

President Trump on Sunday morning ripped the not guilty verdict for an immigrant in the US illegally who was charged with murder in the 2015 shooting death of Kate Steinle.

Jose Inez Garcia Zarate grinned broadly and hugged his public defender tightly immediately after a jury acquitted him of killing a young woman on a San Francisco pier.

Zarate of murder and manslaughter charges after a weekslong trial. Garcia Zarate was found guilty of one count of possession of a handgun by a felon.

"There are a number of people that have commented on this case in the last couple of years - the attorney general of the United States, the president and vice president of the United States - let me just remind them that they themselves are under investigation by a special prosecutor in Washington, D.C.", Gonzalez said after the verdict was delivered. Donald Trump frequently raised the case as an example of the need for tougher immigration laws and a crackdown on illegal residents.

Zarate's attorneys argued Zarate had found a gun that accidentally discharged, and the bullet ricocheted off the ground before hitting Steinle.

The arrest warrant unsealed in the Western District of Texas by the Justice Department on Friday accuses Zarate of violating his supervised release.

Before the shooting, Garcia Zarate, who previously was known as Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, was released from a San Francisco jail despite a request by immigration authorities that he be detained for deportation. But Zarate's public defender said the justice system worked, as the president would be best to remember.

Steinle's father, Jim, told the San Francisco Chronicle that "justice was rendered, but it was not served".
