Galaxy S9 Rumors: Will New Samsung Phone Feature 512GB eUFS?

This brings us to Samsung's announcement of the 512GB eUFS chip that should provide "unparalleled storage capacity and outstanding performance for upcoming flagship smartphones and tablets".

Utilising Samsung's latest 64-layer 512-gigabit V-NAND chips (eight of them), the new 512GB eUFS package provides record storage capacity and faster processing speeds, the company claims. Using UFS proved to be the right decision for Samsung, as it achieved much better performance than eMMC, which was predominantly used by Android phones at the time. Samsung says this is particularly noteworthy, given that its 512GB eUFS solution contains twice the number of cells as its 256GB eUFS solution. Imagine pairing a ton of storage alongside Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip (SoC), or Samsung's recently announced Exynos 9810 (Samsung typically uses two SoCs for its flagship phones, tapping its own silicon for models that ship internationally and Qualcomm's hardware for U.S. variants). Entry-level Samsung flagship phones like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 come with 64GB of memory, but that might not be enough for some users. However, that barrier has now been broken as Samsung today has officially announced its new 512GB embedded UFS solution. In addition, the 512GB eUFS' controller chip speeds up the mapping process for converting logical block addresses to those of physical blocks.

The new eUFS can also read 42,000 IOPS and write 40,000 IOPS for random operations, which is about 400 times faster than a microSD card. That means you only need about six seconds to transfer an HD video clip to an SSD, Samsung says. We also expect to see the rollout of Samsung's own 2018 flagship Galaxy S9 devices at that time.

Another possible market is the imminent Microsoft/Qualcomm Windows-10-on-ARM laptops, which The Register understands will all-but-expect an LTE connection but will not be made worse by 512GB of power-sipping storage. An industry first, these capacious storage components are fabricated from eight 64-layer 512Gb Samsung V-NAND chips plus a controller chip in a package as pictured below. Compare that to the 100 IOPS that conventional MicroSD cards read and you have about a 400x improvement in performance.
